Eat Well Give Back

Eat Well Give Back

Eat Well. Give Back.

Eat Well. Give Back.

The Unconventional Kitchen was created with two key intentions: provide delicious meals and contribute any and all revenue towards supporting the community, and specifically the mission of Vincentian. And furthermore, to achieve this through environmentally and socially conscious means. The Unconventional Kitchen is committed to continue the cycle of reinvestment into the earth and the community to ultimately make a difference in the world, or at least starting in this small corner of Western Pennsylvania.

Why it Matters

Why it Matters

The gap between what it costs to provide care to a senior who needs assistance with daily living versus what the government pays providers like Vincentian has been widening for decades and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Inflation, rising expenses, and staffing costs have contributed to the increasing gap. Additionally, Vincentian has standards of excellence that go above and beyond the required regulatory staffing ratios and care expectations, exemplifying its nonprofit mission of caring for people.

Vincentian relies on the generosity of the community it supports to continue its mission in the face of economic adversity, and to serve those who need care with the best care possible. By supporting the Unconventional Kitchen, you are supporting the care of vulnerable seniors in your community.

Roots

The Vincentian Sisters of Charity, now the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, founded the St. Louise Convent in the heart of McCandless decades ago. Generations of Sisters lived, worked, taught, and cared for others within those walls and were nourished by meals produced out of the convent’s kitchen.

While those Sisters have since moved on, the desire to keep that spirit alive and evolve the convent’s kitchen to serve a new purpose was born. Not only does it serve a new need, but the space itself is reinvigorated and repurposed to lessen environmental impact. Located within St. Louise Convent, the Unconventional Kitchen is both rich with history and an innovative reimagination of care for the community.

Who We Are
Helping

Who We Are
Helping

Vincentian was founded in 1924 with a simple, compassionate purpose: to care for those in Western Pennsylvania who could not care for themselves. Vincentian has an unparalleled reputation for delivering quality compassionate care to all those served, from infants to those past their own 100th birthday.

At the core of who Vincentian is as an organization is progressive humanitarianism; a fearless willingness to evolve to meet the needs of a diverse and changing society. This dedication to evolving to meet each generation’s unique needs is paralleled by the dedication to maintaining people at the center of everything, to honor and prioritize each individual’s human experience.
