Connecting the Generations

Connecting the Generations

Vincentian, since its inception in 1924, has embraced progressive humanitarianism and a fearless willingness to evolve to meet the needs of a diverse and changing society. Vincentian is committed to building intergenerational communities that respond to individuals’ needs and ultimately enhances the human experience.

Our goal is to celebrate each individual where they are in their life’s journey while empowering their personal fulfillment and purpose through wellness and sustainability. Research shows that older adults and college students experience loneliness at a higher rate. Older adults often live alone and spend large stretches of time alone. College students also experience significant loneliness when away from home for the first time.

Intentionally Intergenerational

Independent Living residents at Terrace Place at Vincentian welcomed five LaRoche students to their community in August 2019. The undergraduate Students in Residence program was a success from the outset. People from different generations living together helps to develop organic interactions that could not be fostered otherwise.

The students live at no cost while giving back time each week with the older adult residents, creating programs centered around wellness and sustainability. From international cooking classes to meditation and Yoga to happy hour and more, the students weave fun into what might be a monotonous day.

Personal Care residents at Vincentian Schenley Gardens residents welcomed Chatham health sciences graduate students in August 2020. The students in the personal care setting live in the same building but within a divided wing. The program structure differs slightly from Terrace Place as well to align with student availability, often evenings and weekend interactions with the residents.

My family had a very emotional day on Monday – my mother-in-law underwent breast cancer surgery, and my baby started his first day of daycare at VCDC. My husband and I knew cooking dinner would be the last thing we would want to do, so we ordered the Honey Stung Fried Chicken meal from the Unconventional Kitchen. Not only was the meal delicious, but it was also so convenient to pick up at daycare. Sometimes a little comfort food can go a long way; our Unconventional Kitchen meal was the perfect end to an otherwise stressful day!

Thanks!
